Styles of Area Rugs
Traditional
Traditional rugs include the Persian, Oriental and Tibetan motifs which have been used by rug crafters in the Middle East for thousands of years. The Persian motif has many variations, but generally features a border pattern to emphasize the main pattern. The Oriental motif generally features a medallion in the center of the rug and is surrounded by a border. However it can also include several interrelated designs which combine to tell a story.
These types of traditional rugs also often use smaller geometric designs which are incorporated into the larger motif as opposed to the larger geometric designs found in the Contemporary and Tribal styles of rugs.
Rugs with a Tibetan motif usually have vivid colors large designs and relatively plain and prominent backgrounds. They often include medallions, floral designs, scenes from nature and mythology, and of course, geometric designs.
Our Kathy Ireland First Lady and Karastan Original 700 Series and Nourison 2000 Collections include several rugs in this style.
Transitional
There is a tremendous variety of transitional rugs. Just about any rug that doesn’t fit into any of the other categories can be considered transitional. In fact there is quite a bit of overlap between the traditional and the transitional classification. Many patterns could be listed in either category. Some transitional styles include tropical (like the popular Tommy Bahama Collection), floral, border styles, paneled design (in which one pattern is repeated over and over in a tiled fashion), and many other styles.
Our Kathy Ireland First Lady, Kathy Ireland Essentials, Karastan Original 700 Series, Nourison 2000 and National Geographic Collections, and of course the Tommy Bahama Collection include several rugs in this style.
Contemporary
Contemporary rugs are also quite varied. They often consist of bright colors and unusual shapes and usually contain some kind of a geometric pattern. The designs can range from busy patterns with a variety of colors and shapes including spirals, curves, stripes, waves, circles, squares, diamonds or other geometric shapes to simple designs with just a few colors and/or shapes. They often are the centerpiece of the room and the main focal point. People often start with a bold contemporary rug and design and furnish the rest of the room around it.Our New Wave and New Dimensions Collections are good examples of this style of rug.
Tribal
Tribal rugs are generally very geometric. They consist mostly of stripes and simple geometric shapes. They are usually flat-woven and use only a few colors. Our National Geographic Collection and the New West Collection are good examples of this style of rug.
Flokati
Flokati rugs originated in Greece and have the appearance of a sheepskin. They are made of wool and have a very rustic look and very luxurious feel. They come in a variety of colors but they all have the appearance of a raw sheepskin.
Shag
Shag carpet was popular in the 1960’s. But make no mistake, today’s Shag carpet is nothing like your mother’s shag carpeting. Today’s Shag generally has more density, more twist and is made out of much better and more durable fiber. All of these benefits combine together to produce a much better quality product with much better performance than the shag carpet of the 1960’s.
Braided
Braided rugs are generally made of long strips of fabric which has been braided into thick strands which are usually sewn together to form a circular or oval shaped rug. They are very durable and easy to care for. Many braided rugs are reversible which adds to their longevity.
Sisal, Seagrass & Bamboo
Sisal, Seagrass and Bamboo rugs are made from natural fibers derived from plants. These fibers are very strong and durable. And they are natural fibers, so they are truly “green” products.
